COMM 6900 Course is the capstone for the Master of Arts in Strategic Communication and Media program at Metropolitan State University of Denver. This is a team-based, semester-long project in which students apply their knowledge of public relations and communication to a real-world strategic communication problem. The class will incorporate an agency model, where students form teams and each team has the opportunity to pitch to the client organization at the end of the semester. This approach allows students to apply their learning in a realistic, team-based environment while providing clients with a diverse set of options for solving their strategic communication problem.
(O) The purpose of the Communication Capstone is to provide a capstone experience for students who are completing their Bachelor’s Degree in Communication. Students will be expected to create a capstone project that applies principles learned throughout their COMM 6900 Coursework. Students will produce either a research paper, case study, or thesis as part of the capstone experience.

Communication Capstone provides students with the opportunity to synthesize their knowledge, skills, and values in communication by developing a portfolio of work products related to their interests. For example, students may develop a research proposal that is based on an extended literature review; an advertisement campaign for a new product or service; a speech outline and video of a presentation delivered to a community group; or a public relations plan. Students are expected to display proficiency in both oral and written communication skills. To complete the capstone COMM 6900 Course, students will submit work products in written and/or multimedia formats as well as deliver an oral presentation.
Catalog Description: The communication capstone COMM 6900 Course is the culmination of the student’s academic experience in the School of Communication. COMM 6900 Course Assignment Overview : The purpose of COMM 6900 Course is for students to reflect on what they have learned during their academic experience at American University (i.e., integrating theory with practice). This will be accomplished through two primary components for this assignment—a final portfolio component that provides evidence of application of theoretical knowledge from previous COMM 6900 Courses throughout your degree program at AU (at least one from each semester), along with an analytical overview that addresses how those projects reflect your knowledge, skills, and abilities related to communication theory and practice; as well as a comprehensive examination component which includes multiple-choice questions based on lecture material presented throughout the semester (the exam can be taken multiple times if needed until you earn a passing grade).
COMM 6900 Course is offered in four different delivery modes. Below is a description of each delivery mode and the requirements. Students should consult with their faculty advisor before choosing a delivery mode.
(A) Face-to-Face (on campus)
Students enrolled in the face-to-face section of COMM 6900 Course will work individually or with other students to develop, execute, and evaluate a significant communication project that has real world application. Students will be required to present their projects to their peers for feedback. Students are expected to keep a portfolio that includes all project materials, including at least one research paper related to the topic of their project (minimum 10 pages). This option requires 30 hours of class time plus independent work outside of class time as determined by the student’s project goals and timeline.
(B) Online Independent Project with Regular Individual Meetings on Campus
Students enrolled in this section will work individually or with other students to develop, execute, and evaluate a significant communication project that has real world application. Students will be required to present their projects to their peers for feedback through an online discussion forum. The instructor will meet with each student at least 3 times during the semester either face-to-face or online via Skype/Google Hangout/Phone Conversation or equivalent technology that allows the instructor to monitor student progress and provide individualized guidance as needed (a total of 4 meetings between student and instructor are required). Students are expected to keep a portfolio that includes all project materials, including at least one research paper related to the topic of their project (minimum 10 pages). This option requires 9 hours of class time plus independent work outside of class time as determined by the student’s project goals and timeline.

COMM 6900 Course Description: This capstone COMM 6900 Course allows students to apply what they have learned about communication by reflecting upon personal growth within their communication competence through writing an analytical essay; engaging in small group projects; designing a portfolio; writing a cover letter; creating a resume; participating in mock interviews; interviewing others; evaluating communication competency within organizations/communities; developing presentations using digital technology tools; giving oral presentations with visual aids; completing individual reflection papers on each assignment while considering its contribution to future goals; asking questions during class discussions that connect COMM 6900 Course material with life experiences or workplace experiences; demonstrating active listening skills when interacting with other students during small group activities by restating key points made by fellow students before responding with their own ideas or perspectives related to the discussion question(s); displaying critical thinking skills throughout COMM 6900 Coursework; demonstrating effective written communication skills by applying proper grammar usage throughout all assignments submitted for grading purposes only for this class as well as adhering to APA style guidelines when completing all assignments submitted for grading purposes only for this class (e.g., reference page). As a group, select one communication theory from our COMM 6900 Course reading list that you are most interested in and read it closely (http://www.amazon.com/Communication-Theory-Explorations-Applications-edition/dp/1133586700). Your group will be responsible for creating questions based on this theory to use in an interview with someone who has had experience using or applying this theory in their personal or professional life. These questions can be open ended, closed ended, directed, or undirected. You can use the same type of question throughout the interview or a combination of different types depending on what makes sense to you based on your particular theoretical perspective. You should have between 10 and 20 questions as a group when you are finished. We will talk about these questions as a class next week so that everyone has an opportunity to provide feedback before we conduct the interviews.

Once you have decided which theory you want to use and created your interview questions, each individual within your group needs to identify two possible interviewees based on that theoretical perspective who they think would be willing and available to answer their questions over the phone (we will conduct these interviews via Skype so please make sure your chosen interviewees have access to Skype). One interviewee should be someone who is familiar with using this theory either in their personal life or professional life (for example, if you want to focus on relational dialectics theory and how it relates to conflict management within relationships, then one person might be married while another person might work as a marriage counselor). The second person should be someone who is unfamiliar with using this theory but would potentially benefit from learning more about it because it relates directly to his or her personal life or professional life (for example, if you want to focus on theories related to personal identity development, then one person might be a young student just beginning college while another person might be nearing retirement age). It is up to you whether both people are interviewed by each member of your group individually or whether all members of your group conduct both interviews together but I strongly suggest conducting at least one interview individually because it helps increase confidence when interviewing strangers as well as providing multiple perspectives for data analysis later on in the process (remember we discussed triangulation last week?).
